-
The Soldiers Project is proud to announce that our Founder and Director, Judith Broder, MD, has been named a recipient of the Presidential Citizens Medal for exemplary service to her fellow citizens. Dr. Broder is one of thirteen recipients selected from a field of nearly 6,000 nominees.
On October 20, 2011, President Obama welcomed to the White House the thirteen recipients of the 2011 Presidential Citizens Medal, the nation's second-highest civilian honor. Dr. Broder and her fellow recipients were honored in a special ceremony at the White House. In 2004, when Dr. Broder started The Soldiers Project she could not have predicted the extensive reach of the organization which now has chapters in 8 locations in the United States. Her work and that of our volunteers has impacted service members and veterans and their loved ones from all walks of life and in all stages of healing. The Presidential Citizens Medal is a validation of all of Dr. Broder's hard work. She has made it clear she could not have earned this or any other honor without the commitment of our volunteers. The Soldiers Project celebrates Dr. Broder and her achievements and thanks all of our supporters for your tireless efforts on behalf of our service members and their loved ones. We could not welcome our service members all the way home without your help and support!

Meet the Recipient
Six years ago, at age 64, Judith Broder was cutting back on her clinical psychiatry practice. She had plans to spend time traveling with her husband, Donald, who was "tugging at me to retire."But then the couple chanced to walk along an ocean pier near their Los Angeles home just as a veterans' group was putting up hundreds of little white crosses in the sand, commemorating deaths of U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Broder was stunned by the enormity of the losses. Rather than retire as planned, she soon embarked on a new career as founder of The Soldiers Project, a pioneering nonprofit that provides free mental health care for veterans and their families.
