How to Do Military Tuck

A military-style tuck can be very useful if you’re preparing for a business meeting or job interview.

After all, we often have trouble buttoning our trousers over our shirt without making the latter appear bulgy or unkempt.

Knowing how to do a military tuck will solve this problem. All you need is to follow the steps below, and your shirt will remain flat and smooth around your waist, no muffin top included.

Steps to do military tuck

The Military Tuck

1. Tuck in your shirt, but keep the pants unbuttoned.

Tuck in the front of your shirt like you often do, but don’t button up your pants yet. You may zip them up before proceeding to the next step.

2. Smooth out the front of your shirt.

Now that you have a loosely-tucked button up shirt, run your fingers from the front or sides of the shirt to your back. Smooth out the wrinkles at the front so that most of the slack or loose fabric is at the back of the shirt.

3. Tuck the excess fabric from the back inside the waist of the pants.

Pinch the excess fabric at the back of the shirt, then pull it inside the waistband at the sides of the hips.

Finally, button up your pants to secure the shirt, keeping it taut and smooth across your chest and stomach.

If you have problems, simply repeat the last two steps until you get the military tuck shirt you want. Just note that the button section of the shirt should line up with the fly of your trousers and belt buckle for a tidy look.

Extra tip: Place shirt stays at the bottom of your shirt and the top of your socks before putting on trousers. The clips will keep the shirt from moving or bulging.

Conclusion

Though the military tuck is most often used by men, there’s no reason it won’t work on female clothes as well.

Once you’ve mastered how to do a military tuck, your outfit will have a crisp and clean look, perfect not only for work but also date nights and other formal occasions.
